Last week, on a beautiful cold but sunny winter day, we prepared the Roses and Hydrangeas beds for the winter. We tilled the soil mixing in pelletised manure then we covered it with a warm and nutrient thick blanket made of small sticks, leaves and grass mulched together. Then we added some pine wood bark to add to the looks and tidiness of the edges. This will naturally decompose into organic nitrogen during the winter. The small sticks and leaves provide oxygenation for a hot composting. Furthermore this blanket will protect roots from frost and low temperature. How do you keep your roses and decorative beds nourished and warm during the winter? La scorsa settimana, in una giornata fredda ma con un bel sole, abbiamo preparato le aiuole delle rose e delle ortensie per l'inverno. Dopo aver zappato il terreno aggiungendo stallatico pellettato, abbiamo coperto il tutto con una bella coperta spessa e nutriente fatta di piccoli legnetti, foglie e erba tutto tritato dal nostro potente trattore rasareba. Sistemato alla basa delle piante e dei cespugli di rosa, abbiamo completato con corteccia di confiera per rifinire il bordo preciso delle aiuole. Questo materiale organico si decomporrà durante l'inverno rilasciando nutrimento organico azotato naturale. I piccoli secchi e le foglie tritate aumentano il volume e l'ossigenazione favorendo il compostaggio caldo. Un altro vantaggio di questa tecnica è la protezione delle radici e del colletto dal gelo e dalle basse temperature.
